Truth and Error

Hello church family,

This Sunday, September 20, we continue That You May Know: Walking in the Light as True Disciples of Jesus Christ. In week five, our message is “Truth and Error,” based on 1 John 2:18–27 and 4:1–6.

John writes to believers surrounded by confident spiritual voices. Some sounded persuasive and had once belonged to the church, yet they were drawing people away from the truth about Jesus. His counsel is direct: do not believe every spirit; test what you hear. Christian faith is not vague spirituality, and sincerity alone cannot make a teaching true. Every claim must be judged by the Jesus proclaimed by the apostles—the eternal Son who truly came in the flesh, died for sinners, rose bodily, and reigns as Lord.

We will consider how Scripture teaches us to recognize truth from error without becoming suspicious, harsh, or afraid. The good news is that discernment does not rest on our cleverness. The Holy Spirit keeps Christ’s people in the Gospel, and “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” Our calling is to remain in Christ, listen humbly to his Word, and let truth bear the fruit of faithful love and obedience.

Please join Corinne and me in the church basement at 9:30 for a time of prayer and reflection.

Come ready to worship, to hear God’s Word, and to ask which voices are shaping your faith. We look forward to being together.

Grace and peace,

Christian & Corinne
